Sandboarding & Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Coral Pink Sand Dunes

When I saw a Girls Who Hike event to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, I was in! I bought a spot from someone who dropped out and after hiking Bryce Canyon in the morning, I met up with Kristen and Tatiana at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes.

After setting up camp, we went sandboarding! I was hesitant but loved it!

We were exhausted from walking up and down the dunes, but we had to come back with some wine for sunset.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

…and then for the fun! The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is HUGE! It sits on 36,700 acres in Kanab, Utah with bunnies, dogs, cats, horses, pigs, parrots, and more!

On the first day, I volunteered at the Bunny House. I cleaned their “runs” – bunnies poop a lot – and fed them lettuce.

The next day, I slept in after drinking too much wine and made it to my afternoon shift at Dogtown. Don’t watch National Geographic’s Dogtown unless you want a good cry and end up sponsoring a dog.

In the evening, we got to take a dog back to the cottage for an overnight. We chose Hercules, the office pup, who doesn’t get out much. He has a purple collar so he’s suitable for adults. He was strong and rambunctious but a charmer! We took him for a hike/run – he loved the ride around the sanctuary grounds – and tired him out!

Another highlight: the food! For $5, you get a vegan buffet lunch – we had curry one day and then fajitas the next day. I was skeptical, but they provided salad, entree options, coffee/tea, and multiple desserts!

I can’t wait to go back with my family or friends!
